Guidance for Leaders and Teams On When and How to Use the Catalyst Platform

You’ve taken the assessment and gained access to the platform. Now what? The ideas below provide a guide for when to use Catalyst and where exactly to go inside the platform. Think of it as your own personal tutorial.

Communications

Do you need help finding a better way to interact with a co-worker that you have struggled to connect with before?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section and look them up to get tips on how to work better together. If they are not in Catalyst, estimate their style and use the Building Better Relationships area of Catalyst to gain insight and ideas.

Do you want to see how you can become a more valuable worker and find greater success?

From the main menu, go to the Workplace section and click on the What Drives You link. The bottom part of the page provides three specific strategies that can help you improve your results.

Conflict

A meeting with another group member did not seem to go well and you are not sure exactly why. Do you want to be better prepared in the future so things don’t go off the rails?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section. Click on your team member's profile to find ideas about how to better approach future interactions and improve the ability for a successful result in the future.

Do you need to have a tough conversation with a co-worker and you want to make sure you don’t make it more challenging by something you say, or forget to say?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section. Near the bottom of the page is an area that gives some hints and tips around handling tension when working together. This can be a helpful resource in getting ready for the conversation.

Do you want to share important feedback with a co-worker and make sure that you communicate it effectively?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section. Here you will see what they care about and what they may be stressed by. By understanding what motivates and stresses the person to whom you will be providing feedback, you can better craft your message. This will help you create some safety in the conversation to invite them to better hear the message.

Teamwork

Are you joining a new team in the organization?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section Catalyst to begin learning about your new teammates.

Do you find that your team meetings don’t produce the results that they could?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section. Take a look at the mix of styles in your team. Are people with different viewpoints able to offer them? Is there time for processing information before decisions? Have we created a psychologically safe place to each fully participate in the meetings? Where do the meetings tap into people's stressors and risk shutting people down?

Are you joining a project team to resolve an issue for your organization?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section. Use your styles in building ground rules for the team up front to ensure the team functions smoothly. A good understanding of the Stressors and Motivators of the group members as well as Priorities of each team member can be helpful. Another great resource is in Building Better Relationships with the section on When Problems Need to Be Solved.

Sales and Customer Service

Do you want to be more effective in providing customer service, even to those who you sometimes have trouble clicking with?

From the main menu, go to the Workplace section. Use the You and Other Styles and the Building Better Relationships areas of Catalyst to develop your skills for identifying others' style and learning to adapt to improve relationships with your clients.

Are you looking to build better rapport with your sales prospects?

From the main menu, go to the DiSC-ology section. Become familiar with the two dimensions of DiSC, then use your early interactions with prospects to estimate where they land. For example, are they more Accepting or more Skeptical? Are they more Active or more Reflective? Once you estimate where they are on these two spectrums, you can estimate their DiSC style. Then scroll down to the four styles area and use the information provided to learn how to adjust your communication practices to better align with each prospects' preferences.

Do you want to be more successful in making presentations to your prospects or clients?

From the main menu, go to the DiSC-ology section. Think about the prospect or client you will be presenting to, and use the two dimensions of DiSC to estimate where they land. Are they more Accepting or more Skeptical? Are they more Active or more Reflective? Once you estimate where they are on these two spectrums, you can estimate their DiSC style. Then scroll down to the four styles area for tips on what kind of information you should emphasize in your presentation (for example, more details or more big picture; more facts and data or more anecdotes of other clients' success)?

Leadership

Have you been promoted to lead a team of people and you want to figure out how to best work together?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section and take a look at your new colleagues to understand a little about them. Have a one-on-one conversation with each person to get to know them better, and for them to get to know you. Also, encourage everyone on the team to do the same with each other. After all, your team's success will largely be determined by how well you all work with each other.

Do you want to develop a member of your team in a way that really allows them to flourish?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section and find that team member. Review their tendencies to get a better idea of what they care most about. Then, sit down with the person and have an open dialogue about their goals and how you can best support them in their development journey.

Do you want to reward someone on the team in a way that is meaningful to them?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section and search for that team member. Understand their style and what might be viewed as a great recognition from their point of view. Pay attention to the stressors of their style and make sure that your reward is based on their needs, not yours.

Decision Making

Do you need to present your ideas to someone to gain their buy-in?

From the main menu, go to the Your colleagues section and look them up. Go to the area near the bottom that outlines how to better build buy-in with each other including benefits, roadblocks and tips.

Do you have trouble getting your ideas heard in the group and want to see what you can do to change that?

From the main menu, go to the Workplace section. Review the different styles that make up the group in the Building Better Relationships section and review When You Need To Be More Effective for ideas on how to improve your approach in the future.

Do you have a few decisions where you may have missed considering other perspectives?

From the main menu, go to the Workplace section. Then go to What Drives You to understand your Priorities and how they might be influencing your decision making.
